Instruction for OSD and Freight Claim

OSD means Overage/Shortage/Damage
When you submit an OSD report you are not filing a freight claim. An OSD is a report that is submitted to the railroad/motor carrier and Cornerstone to notify the parties of an overage, shortage or damage to the shipment.

The railroads require that they are notified of any OSD within 24 hours of delivery or the following business day after the delivery was made on a weekend or holiday. Likewise, Cornerstone requires an OSD report be filed within the same parameters.

When reporting an OSD use the appropriate form based upon the mode of transportation for which the damage occurred. Please send that form to the carrier of record and send a copy of the form to Cornerstone. These forms can be located on our website and have “OSD” in the file name. PLEASE include photos upon reporting damages. This enables us to determine if we will require an inspector to visit your facility and survey the damages.

Some synonyms for “Damage” are:
Bent Broken Cracked Creased
Crumpled Crushed Cut Dented
Frayed Gouged Punctured Ripped
Ruffled Scratched Smashed Shattered
Soiled (dirty) Split Stained Torn
Twisted Wet Wrinkled Claim
To file a claim use “Customer Claim Form”
This form is a request for payment for the shortage or damage which has previously been reported. The claim form should be completed and supporting documents must accompany the completed form. A list of the required documents can be found on the attached “Required Documents for Freight Claims”
